KARACHI: The Solar System Geometry Survey (SSGEOS), a Netherlands-based organization known for its earthquake predictions, has forecast a large earthquake in Pakistan that has sparked worries among locals.

According to SSGEOS, a powerful seismic event is expected to hit Pakistan within the next 48 hours. The SSGEOS specializes in monitoring fluctuations in atmospheric electric charge near sea level, which they claim can indicate upcoming areas of stronger seismic activity usually within 1–9 days.

While the SSGEOS provides approximations, their insights into potential quake zones are valuable. In this latest forecast, a Dutch scientist with the SSGEOS reported a major surge in electric activity along Pakistan’s Chaman fault line. This has led them to anticipate a strong quake in the coming 48 hours.

Notably, this scientist has accurately predicted earthquakes before, such as the devastating Turkey quake earlier this year that killed over 47,000 people. However, the Pakistan Meteorological Department has frequently rejected predictions, citing a lack of scientific basis for quake forecasting.

Pakistan sits in a seismically active region due to tectonic plate movement, making it vulnerable to earthquakes. The country has experienced several major tremors in the past. Experts emphasize the difficulty of precisely predicting quakes, though it is possible to estimate higher risk areas based on historical seismic activity.

Therefore, some in the scientific community view such forecasts with skepticism. But should the public in predicted areas be concerned? Only time will tell if this latest warning proves true. Authorities, meanwhile, are advising vigilance without undue panic.
